Quickly moving to remote instruction

We designed these guides to remote teaching with a Faculty of Science in mind but they can be used in any context. The guides are designed to make a big job a little easier. Equity and inclusion are key threads that run through the guide. As Open Education Resources, they can be adapted to other contexts if desired.

The guides contain many adaptable documents:

  • Syllabus

  • Brightspace course template

  • Student questionnaires

  • Conversation skills for synchronous sessions (videoconferences)

  • Course outline

  • Learning/work plan to support student learning

  • And more!

more RESOURCES ABOUT ONLINE LEARNING:

Chemistry-specific resources

  • ChemEdCanada.com now has pages dedicated to chemistry class and laboratory learning.

For students

Our approach is to build or recommend tools that empower students to set their own goals and make their own plans, according to their priorities and values, instead of only providing tip sheets. Below you’ll find three recommendations

This online learning/work plan can be used by anyone, although initially designed for students. As with our other Open Education Resources (OERs), please feel free to adapt to your own context.

Navigating tough conversations: Improve a skill you can use at home, work, school, and more!

While still working primarily in person, Alison created a two-hour workshop for group members on navigating tough conversations, . She is collaborating with students and members of other institutions to build this into a resource for undergraduate students (module) and graduate students (course).

Our Growth & Goals module empowers students to become more proficient learners. We have course-integrated and stand-alone versions. Our eBooks have more resources to support student learning online

Many students are facing challenging situations at home, with examples below. Please consider these possibilities when designing your remote course. Even better, ask students what their situation looks like—I do this through Google Forms or a Brightspace survey.
